A lot of the time when people ask questions like "how do I get better at this game?", they get a simple answer. Practice. New players assume that this is achieved by simply playing the game more, and if they have limited time available to play games this implies they won't get better. On top of that, no one would ever overtake great players because they would be getting just as much practice but starting UT2004 from a higher level of experience. Fortunately, there are better ways to practice. Armies don't train there soldiers by putting them in combat until they get good, they teach each part of fighting as an isolated segment until a soldier can do it without thinking. You don't learn kung fu by getting put into fistfights with black belts on your first day.
Similar principles apply in competitive gaming. You will never learn to do good shock combos or control the important items on a level if you only play games - you need to identify a weakness in your play and figure out a way to target that weakness specifically. If you aren't good at shock, in game you will naturally switch to a weapon you are more comfortable with and never get good at shock. Deciding to play with just one weapon is better, but not by that much. Also, that technique won’t work on things like prediction or armor control because you can’t isolate them while playing a game against real players.
The way to remove a weakness quickly is to figure out that its there then think about how to improve. There are tip guides on improving specific aspects of play here on GameAmp – if you see one specific to one of your problems, read it and do what it suggests. The main point is that you need to think about how to improve.
Here are some suggestions for quickly improving common problems:
I can’t aim well with hitscan weapons – turn the sensitivity down and choose each shot. Holding the trigger down all the time might improve your fire rate, but firing 50 shots that miss is a lot worse than one that hits. Aim in general can be improved by setting up some moving targets, for example godlike bots, then turning god mode on so you can concentrate purely on aiming.
I can’t hit with rockets/flak – Picking each shot is the best way to improve these weapons. It’s harder to do than with hitscan weapons – you have to not only keep fire discipline and not hold down the trigger, you also have to wait for your opponent to set himself up. Wait for your opponent to start a predictable path, for example by jumping, then get ready to shoot the landing point.
I can’t get shock combos – Try running around an empty map picking up shock rifles/shock ammo and shooting combos in particular ways. For example, fire shockball, dodge left then shoot it when you land. If you make shooting a combo a routine rather than having to aim at it as if it was an unpredictable target you will hit much more easily.
I can’t do walldodges etc. well – run around an empty map doing dodges. Then try playing with some bots and god mode, trying to only dodge. Don’t shoot back, just concentrate on dodging. Another trick with dodging (this one only works against non instant hit weapons) is to wait for a shot then dodge it rather than just randomly jumping around.
Here's a link to a mutator that allows you to narrow the game down to a few aspects server side - for example by giving everyone shock rifles and allowing only shock combos to do damage: MUTATOR LINK
Think about how to improve and you will do it much faster.
