I've just finished playing a deathmatch which really showed me the importance of keeping calm while playing. Early in the match, I got the armor/keg etc. and started to get quite a few kills and very few deaths. This is to be expected - having 3x as much health as your opponent makes a big difference in the outcome of a fight. The interesting thing is that later in the match, players got convinced that I was almost unkillable and avoided fighting me at almost any cost, even though some of them had a similar skill level at aiming and dodging. This has happened to me the other way round - a few early losses can demoralize a player, significantly weakening their play for the rest of a match.

When one player is owning a map, other players can often silly things because of the psychological effect this has on them. One example in a game I recently played was someone running away from armor to get away from a better player. This simply gave the armor to the better player, allowing him to get a longer kill streak and increase the psychological advantage he had. Taking the armor at the cost of your life might cut a good player off from their advantage. They get 1 frag, but you break their control. Sounds like a good deal to me.

What can you do when you're at a big disadvantage? Reading Nogame's article about the machine mindset, if you haven't done so already, is helpful. Apart from that, here's some concrete tips:

Try to break their control at all costs. If they're leading 20-0, 1 frag won't make too much difference. Gaining map control will.

Force your own terms on them - if they like staying back with shock, ambush them with the rocket launcher. If they charge at you, try to stay up high and snipe at them.

If you start getting emotional, next time you die just stop and wait a little while before respawning to get ready again.

The biorifle can kill or cripple a player quite easily if you hit them with charged secondary fire. That can break their streak and their psychological advantage with one shot.

Nice Article  Nogame on 06/08/04 04:14

I completley agree. Having been on both sides of the ph33r, its a very powerful element in any game. The players who can get into their zone at the big lan events definatly think on a whole different level as far as confidence in their ability.

Keep em coming though, I'd like to see another one how to gain your composure after you've lost it. That would be a good read (and an educational one for me).

I'll try doing one on that sometime soon. By the way, why aren't my articles showing up on the articles page? they show up on the starting screen of gameamp but when I click articles they're not there.

your articles aren't showing up....  xeonshockwave on 06/08/04 12:07

Because an admin has to approve them first :P

I definitely need to work on controlling my ph33r. When my control is broken, I get so absolutely pissed off that sometimes I just disconnect and rejoin again to start out fresh. Now, that's not a good way to do it, and I don't want to do it... But it just happens :/ Although I'm not an angry person, UT2k4 makes me really mad at times. I have to realize that it's just a game! haha

Great read.

I would wager this is true for any game type. The whole “proactive vs reactive” mindset that plagues so many (including me) which has always been a mental barrier for me.

Maybe I should write an article.

actually they are, they're just on the All Articles link at the bottom, thats something we'll be reformatting within the weeks to come.
