One of the best things about online gaming is the ability to create custom content. With such power one can add maps, in game features, even go for a total game conversion.
The addition of in game features is a useful option to help meat the needs of a specific community. You can break it down into things you want; need, or feel would enhance they way you play the game.
Recently, it’s come to my notice that some people out there who are unfamiliar with why they are used, truly dislike these mutators. It’s very much a shame because they are quality products, but I think it’s worth a try to sit down and explain this in one swoop, instead of arguing on various forums. The first thing is that they are “competitive”, they aren’t made for your casual gamer, and all the advantages of them aren’t quite so obvious right off the bat.
The first and most obvious things people will notice are the actual perception modifiers. These would be the bright skins and hit sounds, and are probably the most griped about part. The logic behind bright skins is somewhat obvious for the most part… none of the skins blend into the background. I will confess this is entirely because the game isn’t played in those terms after a certain level, but if you want to hide in shadows then you aren’t playing on this level and you probably aren’t in Skins servers. The other bright skin issue is the ability to choose your team and the other teams color, the justification in this is that on some maps; one team color or another has an advantage, the skins eliminate that. This will be come more apparent the better you get, a beginner can’t make long distance snap shots nearly as well as a practiced player, these skins enable the game to be taken up to a next level of dexterity and push the limits of how skilled you can be. Hit sounds are similar. You can get very good audio cues of your hits, and thus can be very precise in your mental calculations of how much damage you dealt, which at a certain level can make your weapon swaps more intelligent. Some people dislike these options, for aesthetic reasons, and some make the lame duck excuses that they are cop-outs; far from it. In a competitive game where the goal is to play to the best of your ability, these options break down the wall, and let you take the game beyond that.
So next time if you join a competitive server keep in mind that these options aren’t there just to be silly. They are there to level the playing field, and then let you take your game to next level. A Rolls Royce maybe a beautiful car to drive casually, but if you want to compete that bright red race car is a much better pick.
