General help for noobs!

hey, now i've only been playing UT2k4 for about a month now and have progressed quickly, however, i've reached a standstill...
-first of all, i can usually crank my score near the top but my no. of deaths is always greater than my kills, can some one help me here?!
-also, what route should i take to improve my aim? practicing instagib with bots is no help as they just stand still to fire (even then i miss loads! >.<)
-finally, i have just bought a new mouse (logitech G5) and wonder how to get the most out of it, especially the different dpi settings.
if any1 can help me i'm sure it will help others and i would be very grateful. thanks for reading =)

Friendly Advice

Hey guys,

I've been in the UT realm since the golden days of UT99, and what helped me the most with my aim was the sniper rifle. You don't neccesarily have to go into a "sniper" server to utilize this effective tool. It's the most powerful weapon in your arsenal. It's silent, peeps don't see the bullet coming, and over time, with practice, you'll learn how to snipe on the fly.

All of us at some point or another hit a rut. The key is to have fun. Another thing that's helped me tremendously is to spec other players. That way you get a handle on moves and may even learn a thing or two. Gleen from those who have greater skills and you'll go a long way.

It's always a good idea to set your all your crosshairs the same for every weapon. That way when you switch, it won't throw you off.

In regards to the mouse....I have the Diamondback Razor and I love it!! I've bound my best weapons and trans to the scroll and buttons. It's a matter of personal preference, but if you're good a particular weapon it's always handy to have it easily accessible. And use the trans!!! It's you're best friend. :P

Hope this helps. :)

Wow, thanks purple dragon, i've been practicing with the lighting gun (lot a rankin matches) oo and i have all my hitscan weapons with the same crosshair. btw, do you use your scroll up and down to change weapon up and down or select a specific weapon?
any tips for hitting shock combos on the move? can get them in practice but whenever i play with some one i miss the core or hit them with it...
lol sound like a super noob >.< (and i am hehe)
oh one last thing (i promise) i can crank up my kills quite high in TDM & DM tables but i always die just as much, any tips on how to stay alive! lol (i've asked so many people this...no response lol)
thanks =)

RE: General help for noobs!

Whichever gun works best for you bro in improving your aim, I say stick with it. :) I'll always be a diehard sniper girl, but my next favorite would have to be the benelli shotgun. This is a special mutator, like the sniper, is a one shot kill and forces you to practice good aiming skills. Not many servers carry it, but we do :)

As far as my mouse goes, I have "scroll up" set for trans, "scroll down" for best weapon, my left side button for shock rifle and my right side button for flak cannon. In my weapons list, the sniper is my best weapon right below the deemer...nothing beats a good deemer ;)

No hard and fast rules about shock combos bro...if you've been practicing the "stand still and shoot" method then you've got the first step down, however this style doesn't work well on the servers, because as you probably already have learned...you stand still, you die. With all the weapons, it takes time and practice...I suggest you play exclusively with the shock rifle for awhile, try strafing right and left while shooting the shock ball, then see how well you can nail it with the beam. As you progress, start working on jumping while comboing, then off to the dodge. I've played a lot of peeps, and I'm here to tell ya...not many can hit the combo on the fly on a consistent basis, but it's certainly cool to watch, even if you are the target. ;)

Lastly, how to keep from dying...well here's some things suggested to me and I've learned from trial and error. TRANS, TRANS, TRANS...oh use that trans to get you out of tight spots, utilize multi-levels and make quick escapes, not to mention being a little sneaky. Don't charge...try to frag at a distance as much as you can, this will also improve your aim, steer clear of fire fights, unless you plan on taking as many with you as possible, most importantly though is never stand still...always move, jump, trans and dodge. A moving target is way harder to hit than a stationary one.

Feel free bro to stop by our servers anytime, we're a bunch of fun lovin fraggers and are always happy to help the noob...we were once ones ourselves :)

i would recommend not using wheel scroll at all...

i would bind all weapons to keys that you are comfortable hitting, that way you do not have to apply uncessory movement and pressure to your mouse (which can cause your aim to be off) when trying to switch weapons...

I think what it comes down to is what feels right to you...
I know peeps who do both, bind the mouse to various moves and weaps and others use strictly key binds.

Over time you'll get the feel for what works best and don't forget as your progress to upgrade your input settings...it will take a bit of getting use to at first, but it will increase your dodge and aim.

Good luck bro!

to an extent it is what feels right for you, BUT the thing is you can get used to whatever and it will eventually feel comfortable...

if you use awsd keys to move and you bind lighting gun to 'j' because this feels comfortable to you, it is still an obvious disadvantage because it takes more time to hit than key than for example 'e'...so you would be wasting more time on weapon switches...

so ya it might be what feels right but just cause it feels right it doesnt neccessarly mean it is the best method especially when you can get used to play with whatever and it will eventually become comfortable...

i know someone who uses his pinky to strafe right and left like 'a' is left and 's' is right because this is comfortable...i mean your pinky's mobility and dexterity is not as fast as for left and right strafing than if you use a normal conventional moving method. so basically it would help his movement out a lot if he switch but he doesnt cause it is 'comfortable'...so i dont know how much i can vouch for this 'comfortable' thing. but hey whatever, that is just my opinion...

RE: General help for noobs!

thanks heat, its true, i have just changed my layout of wasd to rdfg its far better for using shortcut keys and the f key has the bump so its easy to find. i'm used to it already!! (except for speach lol) and with nearly all my weapons bound to my mouse the 3 closest keys do fine ;) hehe
about the scroll wheel comment i find it doesnt impale my aim and its useful when ur dodging to whip out ur flack for a point blank shot into the face of another lol
however i kno someone who uses just the keys and the speed at which they change weapon and hit u with it is phenominal!
nehoo...its all opinion really

btw purple dragon, what d'u mean by settings? what are the best to use? or that again preference

thanks.

RE: General help for noobs!

The input settings I was referring to adhere to your mouse, but if ya don't use it, then it's pretty pointless...basically I have mine cranked pretty high so my sensativity and threshhold is close to max, that way my mouse binds work quickly and efficiently. You can adjust these in "settings/input".

Sorry there Heat...didn't mean to upset ya bro, just putting my two cents in :)

RE: General help for noobs!

Oh wow so the mouse sensitivity affects how quickly u change weapons with mouse button binds??
if so, thats sucks! my sens, is 0.36 >.< is there no way to change the button speed?
(the sensitivity is so low cos i use 2000dpi mouse, not a big mouse mat =P) lol
oh, talking of mouse sens, whats the acceleration thingie about?? and the other mouse options?

haha that clip is so funny tapout! (sorry PD hehe)

RE: General help for noobs!

Here's some general info I found about the mouse input settings, hope it helps. :)

Mouse Sensitivity (Game): The higher the number, the more sensitive your character's movements will be to mouse movements. This setting only applies to the actual game movements and not moving the mouse around the user interface. There is no "correct" setting - it all depends on your mouse, the surface it's on, your general Windows mouse speed and your personal preference.

Mouse Sensitivity (Menus): Just like the above option, the higher the number, the more quickly your cursor will move in response to a mouse movement in the user interface (menus, settings screens, etc.).

Mouse Smoothing Strength: This setting lets you change the extent to which mouse smoothing occurs on your movements (If Mouse Smoothing is ticked). I experimented with various values but didn't notice any real difference on my optical mouse. If you are experiencing problems with your mouse smoothness, try varying values.

Mouse Accel. Threshold: This value affects the acceleration of your mouse and can increase or decrease mouse precision. The higher the setting, the more movement of the mouse is needed before mouse acceleration kicks in. That means the higher the value, the more accuracy you'll have with the crosshairs, but your mouse will feel slightly slower for smaller movements.

Dodge Double-Click Time: With Dodging enabled, this setting controls the length of time in seconds during which a double-click of a keyboard movement key is registered as a dodge. That is, with dodging enabled, and at the default setting, if you press A (default move left key) twice within 0.25 seconds then it will register a dodge to the left. Higher values mean more time during which two presses of a key will register as a dodge. I personally recommend a setting of 0.40.

TouchSense Force Feedback: If your mouse supports Force Feedback then you can tick any or all of the four feedback areas to give you more of a "connected feel" to your environment. Using this option shouldn't affect framerate noticeably, and of course if your hardware doesn't support this feature, untick these options.

RE: General help for noobs!

wow thanks once again!
i think i might mess about with the Acc' would u recommend high or low setting?
my aiming is dodgy, sometimes i can get more than 50% on target (LG) but others about 0% lol
consistency really, i have none lol
i've heard lots of people say to put "graphics" settings on low does this really help?
hehe again askin questions, i'm a curious guy lol =)

np bro...the best way to learn is to ask. :)

Here's the config I'm currently using, I adjust as needed:

Mouse Sensativity Game: 2.75
Mouse Sensativity Menus: 1.25
Mouse Smoothing Strength: .50
Mouse Accel Threshold: 5.00
Double Click Time: .85

Of course this is personal preference, but hope it gives you guide to go by.

Happy fraggin!

RE: General help for noobs!

i kno when it comes down to it it takes practice, its possible to reach the same level using different settings, however i think that using certain settings will allow you to get to that level quicker.
for example i recently changed my FOV and my hit ratio more or less doubled as well as my ability to wall jump, if i know what others find confortable, their settings might put me in the right direction for finding my own personal preference.
nehoo, thanks for help and opinions people =) hopefully cu online

I have been playing for 2 years and i think you should try to get a friend into a 1versus1 online and tell him lets snipe on top of the towers on CTF-FaceClassic and u will get a lot of practice that way too.

My first post comments, on purple dragon post about his mouse sensitivity. My mouse sensitivity is 1.00 it focuses my aim i especially with LG and SHOCK.My question is r u good dont take it offensive. My online friend play mouse with settings that r about the same as mine and we hit shock mid air and LG head shots.

Also im interested in the double dodge setting u mention. So ur sayin the higher the value the more times i can double dodge.

Actually, the higher the setting, the longer it takes for the bind to register the dodge. I've played with it both high and low, and have found I dodge more efficiently and for greater distances on the higher setting.

With a lower setting, say around .25, the time to dodge is quicker, but may not be as effective if you're not used to dodging. I've seen in many places where the recommended setting for "double-click" is .40, but again it comes down to how the setting effects your performance and what feels right to you.

Also keep in mind, your skin can effect your play. Female skins can flip, which also, at least for me, makes dodging easier. While male skins generall don't flip, unless modified.

Hope that helps :)
