ok so i ended up at a small (15 or so people) LAN about 6 weeks ago with some mostly-ut99 players from the austin area, and began to realize just how easy it would be to host a ut(99 and 2k4) lan in texas... there's tons of players, so i'd like to get a general response...
no, i don't have a venue, there's no organization, nothing yet... im just wondering how many people would realistically plan on going to a UT lan, most likely in the austin area (depending on how big of a venue we'd need i guess), and the best date we could come up with is beginning or end of this summer (depending on how long it takes to tie everything down)...
not looking or expecting to pull hundreds of people, but i think a few dozen or so could happen if we get it organized...
of course one of the main issues is whether to keep it small and mainly people from the UT community, or to get it promoted and try to get as many people coming as possible and then try to build for prize sponsorships and what not from there... personally i don't care, it'd be cool to have just a small one to hang out with people, but more exposure for the game is always good too...
anyone with any thoughts about this concept can post here...
edit: you can find me in #uttexas on any of the ut irc servers too

I would go to a UT LAN anywhere if I could, but that will always depend on the circumstances at the time.
For instance, this year, I couldn't make it due to going to PDX LAN and then running PAX two weeks later. But if we got something in the works, maybe there was a smaller one this year, and then next year it grew, I'd probably make it a point to get to it - though Texas in the summer time doesn't sound like that great of a vacation. ;) I live in the NW because I like the cooler air. But for UT, yeah, I'd go.

Hotels are actually abundant and hence cheap in Austin, especially in the summer. Many of them were built essentially for 1 event a year (South by Southwest, largest music festival in the damn world, which happens around Spring Break), so there's tons of them that are basically just sitting around most of the rest of the year. Hell a motel 6 should only be about 40 bucks a night here, and in all honesty the rooms themselves aren't too far below a hotel costing 10x as much.
I suppose a venue should be decided upon, although knowing the number of people who would show up would make that process easier.
