1v1 Experiences, Thoughts, Tips?

With Lotus's new netcode, I've begun taking a strong interest in 1v1's and have been playing several on NoEscape Seattle the past few days. I'm not particularly looking for tips on the core game as I comprehend the basics pretty well: timing, spawn prediction, weapon control, being quiet etc.

What I'm mostly interested in is what kind of playstyle and mindset I should be in. I've played CTF competitively for a long time and the gameplay is very frantic and twitch-based what with translocating around and returning flags and such, but when I bring those frantic twitch elements to the 1v1 or tdm game, I'm not sure if it's the correct playstyle I should be using. I've seen demos of top players and it seems that they play a more calm, calculated game, standing in spots waiting for the enemy to jump across their x-hair. I'm sort of torn between these two mindsets and I'm looking for some input from seasoned 1v1 players on what their mindset/playstyle is when they play 1v1's as well as other advanced tips.

Also, how long will it take me to get used to 0 ping from a previous 80. =D

heh well I'm not a top 1v1 player, but I can sympathize with you on the ping changes. It honestly will take about 2 weeks for you to instictively recalibrate.

If your looking for 1v1 players, #2k4tdm on ETG. It's always packed with TDM and 1v1 players, grab one of them, play them and then get some feedback. We currently don't run a PUG/SCRIM bot as everybody is practicing for GGL.

As for your strategies, sometimes you wanna put both of them into play. If your opponent takes 100 camp at rankin in shock room on the platform near 50, hit him with lg, turn, run get 50 and wait at the end of the hall when he comes hit, then jump down to rox. Now when you know you have totally eliminated his shield and 40 of his life now try to be more aggresive with flak or rox. Play to your opponents weakness if he just has hitscans get up close and flak away, or vice versa.

*btw i am not skilled or advanced in any way, but i do watch plenty of demos =)
