3v3 CTF Gameamp.Open tournament

Fundamentally I don't think many things need to change about the general rules in 3v3 as opposed to 5v5. We will be using the exact same rules as in every competitive CTF ladder or event. There are a few though that need to be dealt with:

Pickups

1) Some people think the amp is overpowered for 3v3 and unneccesary. I would tend to agree, especially on maps where there's only 1. It makes the entire match all about who gets the amp, so I propose turning amp off via utcomp.

2) It can also be argued that kegs in certain maps are unneccessary in 3v3. McSwartzly and Citadel are perfect examples of this. However, I can personally make any tweaks to maps that need to be augmented to fit 3v3 better. CTF-3v3-Citadel with everything the same minus the kegs would not take a second to do. I could even take the amp out of maps altogether for 3v3 versions if desired.

Cheese

Simply put, it is not balanced well enough on some maps for 3v3. Imagine trying to stop a shield tapper on Grendel or thorns in 3v3, the map becomes a tapping contest. I'm not sure what the best way to handle this is, but we have a few options:

1) simply avoid using maps that are susceptible to unbalanced cheesing
2) outlaw shield gun usage for anything except vertical boosts

In my own view, I don't see cheese as such a problem in 5v5, but on certain maps in 3v3 it can really make it ridiculous (Grendel for instance).

These are the somewhat controversial issues that still need to be finalized, so I'd like any input here. I will decide on these before too long, but if people want to provide their arguments for or against anything, feel free. This isn't a vote, having 6 people say 1 thing and 4 say another isn't going to decide it, but if through discussion we come up some opinions or even other options, I am open to them for now.

3v3 ctf has been on ladders for a long time and none of them ever had any pickups removed. Its an interesting idea, and I wouldn't be opposed to it. But just to make things easier on you guys running this I probably wouldn't deal with it.

Re: cheese, I think its perfectly acceptable in 3v3 or 5v5, so my vote would be to allow it.

One could make the same argument that, without the amp, you'd have to actually use teamwork to cap instead of simply out-timing the other team.

As it is, your post didn't make any argument whatsoever...

Re: 3v3 CTF Gameamp.Open tournament

3v3 CTF has never been popular in UT2k4. Thus I don't really have any reference to go by.

In ut99 (from my experience) amp was usually not used in all the 3v3's that I played, because it tended to shift the emphasis from teamwork to simply grabbing amp.

I've played 3v3 in 2k4 both with and without amp, and I've always thought it made for a more balanced game with it off. But by all means this thread is here to discuss stuff like this.

By removing powerups it's more like your dumbing down the game, and/or make's better teams not have such a skewed overpower towards weaker teams. However, when you pit two teams that are close in skill, things like powerups will show which team is better at control and probably better at the game in general. I would bet that a team that could outtime another would have a better chance at beating another team of similar fragging anc capping skill.

The question is whether or not it puts TOO much emphasis on it, since every powerup is essentially much more valuable in 3v3 , since there's 2 fewer people to deal with.

Re: 3v3 CTF Gameamp.Open tournament

I don't play 3v3 in 2k4, but I played a lot of it in UT, and imo powerups should be *off* in 3v3 (as they always were in UT).

I don't buy the argument that removing pups somehow "dumbs down" the game. Imo the game is far more dumbed down when it becomes a matter of getting stacked and then shielding your way back while only having to kill or avoid 1 or 2 guys at most. That's just plain lame.

In 5v5, you can deal with it, but in 3v3, that's just ridiculous. It's be the equivalent of having the keg be worth 166 health and the shield worth 166 armor in 5v5.

Also, keep in mind that the # of pups on these maps is skewed for 5v5 play, so what you end up with if you leave them on for 3v3 is just a boatload of pups. Think about Citadel, for instance. With 2 100s & 2 kegs, you'd have 2/3rds of the players in the game with pups at the same time. :P It'd just become a matter of grab and hammer, hammer, hammer.

Where's the "skill" in that?
