Interviewed by: Saito

The first question is what were the reasons to drop the Americup? Everybody expected you guys to put up a good showing.

And those expectations were well founded. Unfortunately, we just couldn't pull it all together when the time came. Even during OLB, and before, it was hard to get the Gold team together for scrims. We're an older crowd, and we've got a lot of real life responsibilities that simply take precedence over what is essentially just a video game. Most of us are juggling school, careers, family, friends, and the unpredictable. Demanding 15-25 hours a week to sit in front of a computer for a non-productive purpose becomes harder and harder to justify.

Even considering this, we had a passion for the game, the community, the competition, and especially for Americup. We were determined to prove ourselves once again, and have a damn good time doing it. Things just don't always work out the way you want them to, and we're all fairly disappointed about not being able to participate.

Moving right along ::LOB:: is divided into both gold, and silver divisions. Most people think that the skill level between most of the gold and silver guys isn't that large. Given that you had an entire group of seasoned players why not just add silver players onto the Americup roster and keep going (as you did on TWL)?

Let me start off by saying that I have the utmost respect for every member in LOB, first--as a person and friend, and second--as a player. But there is quite a skill gap between the Gold and Silver teams. That is originally why there was the creation of a second team.

Ya know, we get a lot of criticism over the whole "Gold/Silver team" thing, but it's been a very positive move for LOB. Instead of having one team where only the best players are allowed to play in ladder matches or tourneys, we have two teams which can go about their business independently. No one is alienated this way. We feel all of LOB has a lot to contribute to the UT community--as they reapetedly show--and denying most of them the right to play competitively because there are better players just isn't fair.

Getting back to the question, LOB had one thing in mind when signing up for Americup--winning. We proved to everyone, and ourselves, that we were up to par with the more elite teams everyone looks up to. After placing a close second in the OLB tourney we were committed to place first or second in Americup. After Gold members started dropping out for personal reasons, Peter, Hectic, and myself seriously discussed what our next step should be. We discussed bringing in some inactive players, and getting them re-seasoned. But the resurgence of popularity in the competitive UT scene made that nearly impossible. We also discussed bringing in some of the Silver team, but as I mentioned earlier, we were not prepared to place any less than second. We had already placed second in OLB, and bringing in players that would put is in a third-or-worse place just wasn't worth the time and effort, for any
of us. At this point, we decided it would be best to just drop altogether.

As far as TWL and Silver team goes, adding Gold to Silver is a lot different than adding Silver to Gold. Besides, Silver team is a sight to behold. Playing matches with them is as humbling as it is enjoyable. Even while being beaten, there's always laughter in the background. These guys know how to have a good time. I just don't think these high-level competitions are where they would shine the most.

The cat is out of the bag on future Unreal events. With the next Americup (and other) American tournaments shaping up for the future what are your plans for them. Would you try to remake the gold team, recruit more players for the gold team, or potentially field a mixed team?

The Gold team settles for nothing less than excellence. Keep your eyes peeled because we're coming back, and in a way you could've never imagined.

ESWC is rapidly aproaching (in fact sign ups are here), and some of ::LOB:: are fairly active in 1v1's. Any of you plan on attempting the qualifiers?

As far as I know I'm the only member of LOB to have signed up for ESWC. I signed up very late, and wasn't able to get my schedule in on time. I will pass it in late, and hopefully it'll be accepted. I'm rusty, but it'll be enjoyable. I still manage to surprise myself when I play the occasional 1v1. Should be an interesting turn out.

Any comments, rants, whatever.

I'm not much for words. Thanks for reading. :)

LOB wonders why they flamed... because of interviews like this where you constantly suck yourself off after accomplishing next to nothing. I seriously try to ignore the things you people fucking say, but honestly, shit like Ons was saying today (that he gets close to beating Stryfe, then I go wax him 43-0, sorry but no one that I beat 43-0 gets close to beating Stryfe), and shit like this. What are you proud about? A second place where the 3rd best team was fucking h2o? Having a close map with a pug team in the finals where one of our players was afk for 5 minutes at the start of the game and you guys just kept killing him over and over?

And what happens when "LOB gold" plays vs. a real team?

http://www.angelfire.com/blog/fatcarl/lobsucks.JPG

I don't want to keep on this flame war with you guys, but you seriously ask for it, especially Nytejade, who I've tried to be cool with, but definately needs to be taken down a notch. late.

  CombatCarl on 05/10/05 23:04

OK. SORRY. Ignore the part about Ons, he claimed to have been able to almost beat HECTIC, not Stryfe, ignore that. blah blah, ppl were talking abotu them at the same time. Ignore that part.

But take in the part about Nytejade being a pompous douchebag, that part still stands.

  SargeLOB on 05/11/05 00:08

what dcrampz said.

  chachu on 05/11/05 00:08

Couldn't resist getting in that dig at h2o, could you? I actually thought those semi-final matches were incredibly fun to watch, and I'm sure the outcome shocked most of the then TDM community. But then, I don't make money playing video games, so what do I know...

  nytejade_LOB on 05/11/05 17:04

What exactly did I claim to accomplish?

All I did was answer questions about why LOB is inactive and dropped out of Americup.

I can't wait to meet you IRL. You're gonna be like :X :X :X "hi"

fatty

  CombatCarl on 05/11/05 18:04

For someone who claims to be grossly more mature than the rest of the community, and on a team that assumes they have better real lives than the rest of the community, you throw out a lot of personal attacks to me when I issue out none. All you retort with is fat jokes, shortly after claiming to be really mature etc.

When you get demolished in game, resort to personal attacks, right Nytejade and LOB cockriders?

Ah yes..

  Saito on 05/11/05 23:26

my two cents...

I feel that the semi final vs h2o, was an incredible match. It was well played (not pro, but still close and highly contested, which IMHO was what counted at the time). It also lit up IRC and forums in a way this community really needed at the time.

  chachu on 05/12/05 00:07

is anyone else but carl actually "offended" by what nyte said?

as PB pointed out earlier, only silver could possibly be offended by nyte's interview (and we're not, because it was all discussed internally)... but was it this line that you (carl) took issue with:
"we proved to everyone, and ourselves, that we were up to par with the more elite teams everyone looks up to."

because if you did, i think you need some perspective.

i don't think it's even debatable that we established ourselves as being one of the better active clans AT THE TIME... perhaps not on par with some of the CURRENT top teams (con, gravity and of course x6) but we were at least legitimate contenders for the top three spots of OLB1.

Very few people expected us to beat h2o. Yet we somehow did. We also had a few close maps with -obsoleet- a clan that was regularly blowing ALL of their opposition out of the water by A HUNDRED PLUS POINTS. But from your admittedly leet and lofty vantage point, that may not seem like much of an accomplishment... believe me, from our perspective - for a team of friends that started playing ladders (*gasp* how newb) in late 2004, it WAS.

  Saito on 05/12/05 00:20

/shrug

I have long tried to stay out of comments in interviews I conduct, but I guess this one breaks the rule.

I'd love to think OLB meant something. I think the admins here feel very proud about creating an online event that (shock) finished. And while I understand CC's stand point of “no real teams played in it” I beg to ask, what is a real team? Like it or not there are 2 concrete facts about OLB and the teams. It was the full of active TDM teams, that were owned silly by what was a pickup team.

At the time OLB was something we pulled out of our rectums, worked our asses off to finish, and when it was done, well all felt proud about it (I'm not going to go into the amount of time RA, myself, pb, con, and HV, invested in various areas, and hats off to ra he busted his ass probably more than I did). Granted it means shit (it's not GGL, or anything major) but at the time it was the best thing there was.

While I do side with sean on that it meant nothing, and the proof is in the pudding now. I do also side with LOB. What happened then, in that moment was special. It wasn't pro, and nobody got paid. What it was is good old fashion fun (some times people for get that critical word). Regardless of what happens now, what happened then was a good thing. I'd like to think we can all (myself included) stop being collective jackasses over what happens, and try to make sure this lasts.

And on that note....

It's back

  SargeLOB on 05/12/05 01:11

i think that saito wins this conversation. all cockriding, fatassery, and "better real life" issues aside, we are all playing the same game, which is meant to be "fun". lets just stop.

these conversations tend to get way to out of hand, and no one persons to blame. these conversations are great examples (in my opinion) of how to get no-where quickly.

bring on the next OLB!

...my 2 cents.

I expected you to beat h2o. Personal issues aside, I think h2o is awful. Period, an unbiased opinion, it's a group of decent-at-best players with egos the size of mine, but none of them have any understanding at all on how to play a team game.

That's just my opinion, I mean, be proud of beating h2o, but I don't think it was unexpected, for me anyway. A problem I have with what Nytejade said, is that he said for sure LOB would have finished at LEAST 2nd place in Americup. Of course, he isn't playing in Americup, because at the moment, SBP, LCD, Con, x6, Gravity, h2o, are all better than LOB Gold (at the moment, this moment). That's not really opinion, that's factual, I'm not saying you can't get back into playing shape, improve, etc. But that's a mighty bold statement for someone is on a weak team at the moment.

Saito is also right. Besides the OLB bitching, I appreciate a lot the OLB tournaments. Hell, that's what revived my interest in UT2004. I hadn't played in months before that, then I played in that (without any real practice, 1v1's or TDM scrims). It didn't revive the community, but it jumpstarted it. So much thanks from me.

Now Sarge, lastly. LOB are the only ones claiming to have better real lives than the rest of the community. You guys do it all the fucking time. It's retarded because it's not true, most community members have busy lives like the rest of LOB, msot of the time myself included. So LOB is a clan that prides itself on maturity and having fun. So Nytejade says some pretty bold comments about not only LOB obviously being at least the 2nd best team, but says all of LOBs lives are better than eveyrone elses... That's not instigating anything?

Then I didn't personally attack a single one of you, and all I get is fat jokes in return? That's maturity, that's an outstanding life you have that you can't handle inferiority to me in UT2004 so you have to personally attack me on gaming forums?

Okay.

-CC

P.S. I don't care what you call me in actuality, just making a point.

WombatCarl:

You might want to take another look over the interview before making any more comments.

I never said we would definitely place 2nd. I said we were determined to place no worse than second, and also, if we weren't prepared to place 1st or 2nd we wouldn't want to even bother participating.

We have to set goals for ourselves, no matter how ridiculous they seem to you.

  nytejade_LOB on 05/14/05 14:48

Also, the few times we've even played you or Check6, we've been very friendly. We never insulted anyone after losing, no matter how horribly we lost.

We personally attack you in an ironic fashion so that maybe you'll turn attention to your own comments, and see just how ridiculous they are.

You think if I got in a serious argument, or debate, with someone I'd start throwing out fat jokes? There's just no other way to communicate with people as unreasonable as you.

Also, if you don't like being called fat, get on a treadmill and stop playing video games/eating cookies/drinking soda. :)

  CombatCarl on 05/14/05 15:40

I said it myself.

"P.S. I don't care what you call me in actuality, just making a point. "

And yes, everytime we play LOB (post obsoleet era) we've been frinedly and insult free. I don't get on your case unless you get on mine first.

I said we dropped Americup because we don't have time to play video games. I never mentioned you, or anyone else, as a basis of comparison. I'm sure everyone has plenty of responsbilities. We just decided that we couldn't fit UT into the list of ours. Your reading comprehension amazes me.

Pre Americup we were the 2nd best team. Post Americup, I said we were determined to be the 2nd best. And again, I never made a comparison to anyone's lives. I gave OUR reasons for dropping Americup. You're just too insecure to objectively read something that has NOTHING to do with you or your friends.

The lyrics, "you're so vein, you probably think this song is about you," come to mind.

I'm amazed I even have to address these comments. If you had just taken more time to read the interview, instead of browsing through it with your preconceived notions of what I was "getting at," you could have spared all of us this bs.

"I'm not making personal attacks at you. I'm just stating the FACTS. You ARE fat. That's just the truth. People just don't like to hear the TheTRUTH."
^^^^^^^

That's the kind of BS we have to put up with from you. Wow, fuck this.

The word you're looking for here is "irony."

If you're offended, go to the gym, and eat better.

If you have some type of disease, I apologize to you, as it's none of your own fault.
