As a newcomer to onslaught I may not be the best source for tips, but this tactic seems to have some advantage.
Don't wait to see a vehicle before firing an AVRiL. Either listen for sounds of vehicles, or just randomly/strategicly guess when a vehicle may come into view and have your rocket already up in the air.
Maybe even just fire it high into the sky. Then, when that raptor or tank comes round a hillside into view, alt-fire (right mouse click) onto the target.
Your rocket will already be primed and may even be behind or above your target - when you lock-on to them they will not be able to see where it's coming from and will have trouble avoiding it.
Also, you are ready to fire off a second rocket as backup.
